Pashupatinath Temple, Mandsaur
About Pashupatinath Temple, Mandsaur
The Pashupatinath Temple at Mandsaur is dedicated to Lord Shiva and represents a significant example of Gupta-era sculptural art. The temple's centerpiece is a remarkable eight-faced Shiva Linga carved from deep copper-colored igneous stone, weighing 46 quintals and standing seven and a half feet tall with a circumference of eleven feet. The idol was discovered partially exposed in the Shivna River bed on June 10, 1940, by a washerman named Udaji, after centuries of submersion. It remained in the open for over twenty-one years before being formally installed in a constructed temple structure in 1961. The eight faces represent different aspects of Shiva—Sharva, Bhava, Rudra, Ugra, Bhima, Pashupati, Mahadev, and Isha—each presiding over natural elements and cosmic principles. Located near the Rajasthan border in the historic Malwa region, approximately 200 kilometers from Indore, the temple has contributed significantly to understanding Gupta Empire architecture and chronology.
