About Nellaiappar Temple

Located on the northern banks of the Thamirabarani River in Tirunelveli district, Nellaiappar Temple stands as a testament to South Indian temple architecture spanning multiple dynasties. The original complex was established by the Pandyas, with subsequent structural additions made by the Cholas, Pallavas, Cheras, and Madurai Nayaks. The sanctum and gopuram were constructed by Nindraseer Nedumaran (Koon Pandyan) in the 7th century CE, with the temple's completion dated to 700 CE. The presiding deity is revered in the Tevaram, a 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical work composed by the nayanmars, earning it classification as a Paadal Petra Sthalam. Spanning 5.9 hectares and surrounded by concentric rectangular walls, the temple complex houses multiple shrines and attracts lakhs of devotees and tourists monthly. The temple is administered by the HR & CE Department of the Tamil Nadu Government.
