About Kunnandarkoil Cave Temple

Located in the village of Kunnandarkoil, approximately 40 kilometers from Pudukottai and 22 kilometers from Keeranur, this ancient cave temple represents a significant specimen of late Pallava and early Chola rock-cut architecture. The temple was originally constructed during the reign of Pallava king Nandivarman II (710–775 CE) by the Muttaraiyar kings, who served as lieutenants under the Pallavas. The site contains numerous inscriptions documenting patronage from the Cholas, Chalukyas, Pandyas, and Vijayanagar Empire, reflecting its importance across multiple dynasties. The temple features a distinctive mandapa shaped like a chariot with horses, and a separate Muruga temple stands atop a nearby hill. Recognized as one of South India's oldest stone temples, the structure is now protected and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
