Kolathukara Mahadeva Temple stands as a unique spiritual site in Kulathoor, Thiruvananthapuram, where Lord Shiva and the goddess Bhadrakali coexist in sacred presence. Originally dedicated to Bhadrakali in her fierce Raudrabhava form, the temple underwent a transformative consecration in 1893 when Sree Narayana Guru installed a Shivalinga, marking it as the third temple where the revered social reformer performed such a ceremony. This act symbolized Guru's opposition to animal sacrifice rituals prevalent in Bhadrakali temples of that era. The site's history traces back centuries to when it was known as Vishakkad, a forest region, eventually evolving into Kolathukara, named after weavers from Kolathunadu who migrated to the area. The temple remains distinctive as one that restricts public entry to the sanctum, with the Bhadrakali idol's face covered and repositioned in the northwestern corner of the enclosure, preserving the goddess's spiritual presence while honoring the new primary deity.
