About Karat Shiva Temple
Situated in Kommayad near Mananthavady in Kerala's Wayanad district, Karat Shiva Temple stands as one of the region's most ancient religious structures, with origins tracing back roughly a millennium. The temple suffered destruction during the 18th century at the hands of Tipu Sultan but was subsequently restored through the collaborative efforts of Krishnan Nambeesan and members of the community across all religious backgrounds. The temple maintains active worship practices, with Shiva puja performed on the first day of each Malayalam month. The principal festival, Prathishta Dina, is celebrated annually on May 10 and 11, drawing devotees to commemorate the temple's significance.
