Kamalamai Temple (Sindhuli)
About Kamalamai Temple (Sindhuli)
This significant Hindu temple stands in Kamalamai municipality within Sindhuli district of Bagmati Province, approximately 200 meters from the BP Highway along the Kamala River, from which it derives its name. The temple holds deep historical importance as a place of worship for the Shah dynasty. According to Hindu mythology, the temple commemorates the goddess Kamala, described as the divine sister of Ganga. The legend recounts how Kamala atoned for accidentally damaging sesame plants by serving peasants, and was eventually released from her penance. In observance of this mythological narrative, sesame seeds are notably not offered at this temple, distinguishing it from other Hindu shrines. The temple is unique as the sole sanctuary in Nepal where fish are ritually sacrificed as offerings. Annually on Makar Sankranti, a festival is held where devotees present offerings to the goddess with hopes of having their wishes granted.
