Kamala Narayana Temple, Degaon
About Kamala Narayana Temple, Degaon
Built in 1174 CE by architect Tippoja under the patronage of Queen Kamala Devi, wife of Kadamba king Sivachitta Permadi, this temple exemplifies the architectural sophistication of the Kadamba dynasty. The structure features a rectangular layout with a pillared hall adorned with elaborate decorative carvings including roaring lions, dancing figures, and intricate scrollwork. Three distinct shrine cells house different deities: the first contains a statue of Narayana, the second depicts Lakshmi Narayana with the goddess seated upon Lord Vishnu's lap, and the third honors Queen Kamala Devi flanked by attendants. The interior ceiling displays an inverted lotus motif carved with exceptional artistry, while the exterior stone panels bear emblems of the Kadamba dynasty. The temple's tiered superstructure and colonnade of richly carved pillars represent the pinnacle of Kadamba sculptural achievement, a style that later influenced Hoysala construction.
