Gola Gokaran Nath Temple
About Gola Gokaran Nath Temple
Located approximately 30 kilometers from Lakhimpur Kheri district headquarters, this sacred Shiva temple stands as a significant pilgrimage destination in northern India. The temple is distinguished by its unique Shivlinga, which bears an unmistakable resemblance to a cow's ear—a feature believed to be unparalleled globally. According to Hindu mythology preserved in the Varaha Purana, Skanda Purana, and Shiva Purana, the shrine's origins trace to Sage Nandi's intense penance, which pleased Lord Shiva and resulted in the establishment of three sacred sites: Uttar Gokaran, Dakshin Gokaran, and Shringeshwara. Local tradition also recounts how the demon king Ravana sought to transport Shiva to Lanka, but through divine intervention, the deity remained at this location. The temple attracts thousands of devotees annually, particularly during the Maha Shivratri festival, and is celebrated as a smaller counterpart to the holy city of Varanasi.
