Erawan Shrine
About Erawan Shrine
Located at the busy Ratchaprasong intersection in central Bangkok, the Erawan Shrine was constructed in 1956 to appease spirits believed to be disrupting construction of the original Erawan Hotel. The shrine enshrines Phra Phrom, depicted with four faces each representing different life aspects: career and success, relationships and family, wealth and prosperity, and health and well-being. Devotees walk clockwise around the statue, addressing each face with specific wishes. Common offerings include marigold garlands, lotus flowers, incense, candles, and carved wooden elephants recalling Erawan, the three-headed elephant mount associated with the deity. Worshippers whose prayers are answered often commission the resident classical Thai dance troupe to perform in thanksgiving before the shrine.
