Brahma Temple, Bramha Karmali
About Brahma Temple, Bramha Karmali
Located in the village of Nagargao near Valpoi in Goa's Sattari taluka, this temple preserves an exceptional masterpiece of Kadamba sculpture. The idol, carved from a single piece of black basalt, depicts Lord Brahma with four heads and his traditional attributes: a ladle in the upper right hand, the Vedas in the upper left, a water vessel (kamandal) in the lower left, and prayer beads (mala) in the lower right. The deity stands on a beautifully carved lotus pedestal. According to local tradition, the idol was originally housed in Karmali near Old Goa and was rescued by devotees in 1560 when Portuguese forces began destroying temples in coastal areas. The devotees carried the heavy sculpture across the river into the forests of Sattari, establishing a new settlement that became known as Brahma Karmali to honor the deity's original home. The current modest temple structure serves as a sanctuary for this ancient artifact, making it a significant site for understanding Goa's pre-colonial Vedic heritage and Konkan artistic traditions.
