About Bijasan Mata Temple, Salkanpur

Perched on an elevated summit in Salkanpur village near Rehti in Sehore district, this revered shrine honors Maa Vindhyavasini Beejasan Devi, a fierce form of Goddess Durga. The temple's sanctum houses an idol of the presiding deity facing south, preserved in its purest form with minimal ornamentation to allow devotees to focus entirely on the goddess. According to temple lore, two sacred eternal flames—one fueled by coconut oil and another by ghee—have burned for nearly 400 years, alongside a holy fire maintained by saints whose ash is distributed as Mahaprasad. The temple's origins trace to a legend involving Banjaras whose lost cattle were miraculously recovered after prayers at this sacred spot. Another tradition connects the site to Goddess Mahishasuramardini, claiming that Maa Durga defeated the demon Raktabeej at this hilltop and subsequently rested in a victorious meditative pose called Vijayasana, giving the shrine its alternate name Vijayasana Dham. Subsidiary shrines honor Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Bhairava. A development project called Grand Devi Lok, inspired by Mahakal Lok, is underway to enhance facilities for pilgrims.
