About Bhagabati Temple, Banapur

Located near Chilika Lake in Banapur, Khordha district, the Bhagabati Temple stands as one of Odisha's most significant Shakti Peethas. The current structure dates to the 13th century, though worship at the site extends much further into antiquity. The temple features distinctive Odishan architecture with a high main sanctum and Jagamohana assembly hall. The eight-armed idol of Goddess Bhagabati is crafted from Ashtadhatu (eight metals). Historically, the goddess served as the presiding deity of the Paika warriors and regional rulers. During the Ashwini month (Mulastami to Amavasya), multiple goddesses including Bhagabati, Birjai, Kalijai, Narayani, Sitambhari, Budhi Thakurani, and Polakasuni are worshipped, attracting lakhs of devotees. The temple complex hosts elaborate daily rituals and celebrates major festivals including Dussehra, Pana Sankranti, and Dola Purnima with unique local traditions.
